Thor Guard System Will Be in Effect Until November 30

Thor Guard System Information

On Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System was tested for the first time this year. It will remain in operation until November 30, 2019. The system does not operate during the winter months as the batteries must be removed from the units to prevent them from freezing. The units will also be tested at 10:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month through November.

Here is some information on the Thor Guard system:

• If atmospheric conditions are right for lightning to develop, the horns and lights will activate, indicating that individuals should seek shelter.
• One long horn blast means that there is a strong risk of lightning. The strobe light should also illuminate to indicate the continuing risk of lightning. Under both of these circumstances, all individuals should seek shelter in a building or vehicle.
• When three short horn blasts are heard and the strobe light ceases to illuminate, the threat of lightning has passed, but use caution if conditions continue to appear threatening.

Although this system is meant to warn the public that conditions are right for possible lightning danger, please know that this system is NOT 100 percent accurate as it operates on radio waves which are variable. As not every unit will go off simultaneously, please use common sense when conditions appear threatening.
