Deerfield Park District Welcomes New Executive Director, Annemarie Flaherty

The Deerfield Park District is thrilled to announce the appointment of Annemarie Flaherty as its new Executive Director. With a lifelong passion for parks and recreation, Annemarie brings a wealth of experience and a hands-on approach to her new role.

Annemarie’s career in parks and recreation began at the age of 13 with her first job as a swim aide. She quickly advanced through various roles, including lifeguard and front desk staff, laying a strong foundation for her leadership. At the Arlington Heights Park District, Annemarie spent nearly seven years in key positions such as Recreation Supervisor, Lake & Athletic Supervisor, and Athletic Director.

These early experiences equipped Annemarie with the leadership skills necessary for executive roles. Most recently, she served as the Executive Director of the Norridge Park District. Prior to that, she gained her first executive experience as Executive Director of the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center JPA in California.

Annemarie was drawn to the Deerfield Park District by its diverse facilities and programs, as well as the energetic and caring staff. “The community’s strong participation and value placed on parks and recreation made this position incredibly appealing,” she says.

Looking ahead, Annemarie envisions the Deerfield Park District continuing to strengthen and expand its programs, facilities, and parks. Her top priorities in the coming months include ensuring a smooth transition, getting to know the district and its team members, and engaging with community partners and residents.

Annemarie’s leadership style is characterized by flexibility and strength, tailored to meet the needs of each individual and situation. She believes in the power of teamwork, stating, “The team, my co-workers, are my greatest strength as a leader—together, we are stronger.”

With hands-on experience in every aspect of park district operations, Annemarie is well-equipped to lead the Deerfield Park District. From managing events and facilities to overseeing construction projects and complex HR activities, her comprehensive knowledge will be invaluable in her new role.

Annemarie plans to engage with staff, volunteers, and the community on a personal level, taking the time to listen, observe, and understand their needs. “I hope to connect with everyone in person—at events, programs, and facilities—to better support them and the community,” she shares.

“I am very excited to be a part of the Deerfield Park District and look forward to working together with the park board, staff, volunteers, community partners, and residents, ensuring each day is a wonderful day at the park,” Annemarie says.
