Deerfield Park District has received hundreds of emails in the last 2 days requesting Deerfield Park District rename Mitchell Park. Many of those emails eluded to a possible vote of the matter at the Park Board’s June 4, 2020 workshop meeting. As the meeting is a workshop meeting, no action can be taken on any subject at this type of meeting. The Park Board of Commissioners can only vote on matters at their Regular Board Meetings which are typically the third Thursday of each month or at a Special Meeting which has to be established in accordance with the Open Meetings Act. The topic of renaming was briefly discussed at the meeting under other items on the agenda, but no action could be taken.
Emails that specifically addressed a Public Comment request were read aloud during the Public Comment Section of the meeting. The Park Board was also informed of the high number of similar emails received up to the start of the meeting. The Park Board acknowledges the high level of interest in this matter and the subject will be placed on their June 18 Regular Board meeting agenda as a discussion item. As it will be an agenda item, the Park Board could possibly vote on this matter. They could also discuss, and not take any action at the meeting. The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm and phone numbers to call and listen in to the meeting will be posted on the meeting agenda. The agenda is typically posted the Friday before the meeting on the district’s web site under Board of Commissioners.
