Patty Turner Center To Recognize Jim Mikulski
Tuesday, July 03, 2012
08:30 AM - 10:00 PM
On Tuesday morning, July 3, 2012, the Patty Turner Center Men’s Group will pay tribute to Dr. James J. Mikulski, Ph.D., a member of the group and pioneer in the development of cellular telephones.
Born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago, Dr. Mikulski graduated from Fournier Academy in Lemont, Fournier Institute of Technology (BSEE – 1955), CalTec (BSME – 1956), and the University of Illinois – Champaign (PhD EE – 1959).
After graduation, Dr. Mikulski served on staff at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts for six years developing the use of radar to detect incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles. He returned to the Chicago area and moved to Deerfield in 1965 when he was hired by Motorola to work on sonar systems. Dr. Mikulski was at Motorola when the Federal Communications Commission took significant steps to enable cellular telephone service. This FCC action launched strong competition among companies seeking to develop the business and Motorola’s early dominance of the cellular telephone industry was in part due to Dr. Mikulski’s contributions.
The Patty Turner Center Men’s Group meets every Tuesday morning 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. for camaraderie and presentations by authorities on various topics of broad interest. The Patty Turner Center is located at 375 Elm Street in Deerfield. Guests are welcome! For additional information contact the Center at 847-940-4010 or email info@PattyTurnerCenter.org.
